Research writing laboratory

A strong paper makes its claim, mechanism, evidence and boundaries easy to inspect. Writing cannot compensate for an unsupported result, and copying the appearance of an oral paper does not guarantee acceptance.

Main research-paper tracks only; workshops and special tracks can have different calls. AoE means Anywhere on Earth (UTC−12), not the venue timezone. Each announced event site is plotted separately, including all three NeurIPS 2026 cities; venue details and workshop-specific locations are recorded below. These are dated editorial records, not a live feed. Reconfirm official instructions before submission or travel.

  • The 2027 edition had its submission deadlines in September 2026. The abstract is listed as an AoE date without a separate clock time; the author guide explicitly gives 11:59 PM AoE for the full paper.
  • The displayed event period includes the main conference on April 26–28 and workshops on April 29–30.
  • The homepage lists California and says venue information will be posted. The workshop call identifies San Francisco; its workshop-year text contains a 2026 typo. The period here follows the 2027 homepage and Dates schedule. The venue is left unconfirmed rather than inferred from an image caption.

  • The displayed event period includes the main conference on April 23–25 and workshops on April 26–27.

  • These are main-track deadlines; the full-paper deadline includes all supplementary materials. The official sources give AoE dates without a separate numerical clock time.
  • Sydney is the main site: expo December 6, tutorials December 7, main conference December 8–10, and workshops/competitions December 11–12.
  • Atlanta and Paris are official satellite sites, both December 9–13. Atlanta has main sessions/tutorials December 9 and main sessions December 10–11; Paris has main sessions/tutorials December 9–11. Both hold workshops December 12–13. Do not treat the three locations as one continuous Sydney event.
  • Paris uses two venues: the Palais des Congrès for the main meeting and workshops, and Sorbonne University (Jussieu) for selected December 12–13 workshops. Check the workshop schedule for the correct building; Paris remains one satellite city, not two separate conference editions.

Official requirements apply to a particular conference edition and submission stage. The author guide and official template control page limits, anonymity and formatting—not an accepted PDF from another year.

Observed choices describe what an inspected paper actually does: where it introduces an assumption, how a figure explains a mechanism, which comparison supports a claim, or how an appendix makes the result reproducible. They are examples, not universal rules.

Editorial exercises help you apply those observations to your own problem. They are original worksheets, not conference-endorsed templates.

  1. Problem: identify a concrete setting and a consequential limitation.
  2. Claim: state a falsifiable improvement, explanation or resource contribution.
  3. Mechanism: explain why the proposed change could address that limitation.
  4. Test: design a comparison that can distinguish the mechanism from alternatives.
  5. Boundary: state where the evidence stops and what remains uncertain.

The same chain works differently for theory, empirical methods, systems and datasets. A theorem needs assumptions and a proof; a speed claim needs a defined workload and resource accounting; a benchmark needs a defensible measurement target. Do not force all of them into a leaderboard story.

Oral papers provide useful examples across different research styles. However, a corpus containing only accepted oral papers has selection bias: it cannot tell us that a layout, vocabulary or figure count caused acceptance. Presentation category is not a universal scientific-quality ranking. The inspected camera-ready paper may also differ from the submission that reviewers judged.

Use the corpus to answer “How can I make this argument clearer?” rather than “Which surface features should I imitate?” Preserve the exact source version when comparing drafts or conference editions.

Start with the ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV or AAAI overview for a short synthesis of wording, structure, visualization and evidence. From there, choose corpus measurements, contribution-specific plans, inline visual examples, paper studies or the selected edition’s rules and template. NeurIPS explicitly marks source gaps and measures available author versions only. ICCV uses the latest completed 2025 edition, not an invented 2026 edition. ICML distinguishes Main and Position Track arguments. AAAI retains all 1,058 main-track oral records and prioritizes a selected deep teaching collection across contribution styles; its statistics do not represent the entire conference. Separate uninspected supplements are not counted as read appendices.

Each conference has one overview; its editions keep their own official sources, dated inventories, paper studies and rule conflicts. The shared worksheets remain reusable. ICLR 2026 and CVPR 2026 retain separate measurements: CVPR’s two-column body and commonly separate supplement must not inherit ICLR’s page accounting. Later editions can follow the same structure without blending different years’ evidence.
