ICCV — writing guide

Make the visual problem concrete, then make the explanation testable. Show the observation or failure motivating the work, define the information available to the method, and connect the changed computation to controlled evidence. An attractive teaser is useful only when its claim survives the protocol and results.

The latest completed edition studied here is ICCV 2025. ICCV 2027 is announced, but an announcement is not a completed oral corpus or a verified submission-rule package. The examples below are lessons from accepted papers, not official stylistic consensus or a recipe for acceptance.

Learn the patterns before inspecting individual papers

Section titled “Learn the patterns before inspecting individual papers”

Start with the oral-corpus atlas for caption and section distributions, contribution-type plans for outlines and conditional artifact packages, or the inline visual gallery for concrete examples. The paper studies preserve detailed observations and source pages.

Explain the visual or physical setting first

Section titled “Explain the visual or physical setting first”

Show what is observed, what is inferred and what is unavailable at test time. A reconstruction paper needs acquisition and calibration conditions; a localization paper needs the coordinate system and evaluation split; a foundation-model study needs training-data and scale definitions. Do not allow one pipeline arrow to hide additional supervision or an expensive pretrained component.

The GT-Loc study illustrates how a representation choice can become a visual explanation: time is cyclic, so the distance used by the model must respect wraparound rather than treating midnight as a discontinuity.

Give each display a distinct explanatory job

Section titled “Give each display a distinct explanatory job”

Use an overview for the full method, a detail panel for the changed operation, and aligned qualitative results to expose visible consequences. Label intermediate representations, meaningful arrows and training-only signals. A physical prototype benefits from a ray model or acquisition diagram alongside the photograph; the photograph alone rarely explains the mechanism.

For quantitative plots, label units and the relevant operating conditions. Show local detail at readable scale rather than shrinking many panels into one undecipherable teaser. The gallery pairs display examples with what their captions need to specify.

Build tables around the comparison contract

Section titled “Build tables around the comparison contract”

Distinguish matched controls from different architectures, training corpora or evaluation regimes. Retain a baseline’s winning column, and state which metric supports the main claim. The native multimodal scaling study is useful for separating model scale, token budget and per-task outcomes. An aggregate leader need not win every task.

For an efficiency claim, place quality beside measured time and memory, and define what timing includes. The ReCoVEr study compares different accuracy–resource operating points. A model name or FLOP count alone does not establish a deployment benefit.

Write claims at the scale the evidence supports

Section titled “Write claims at the scale the evidence supports”

Prefer concrete subjects and verbs: identify the component, its operation and the observed consequence. Explain the closest-work difference without relying on promotional adjectives. Distinguish estimated physical properties from independently measured ground truth, benchmark accuracy from clinical utility, and visual plausibility from faithful reconstruction.

An ablation should test an explanation, not merely remove a list of modules. When a result does not support the broadest wording, narrow the wording rather than hiding the result in supporting material.

Keep the main paper self-contained and the supplement useful

Section titled “Keep the main paper self-contained and the supplement useful”

The inspected corpus consists of official main PDFs. Separate supplementary links are recorded where available, but they are not counted as inspected appendices. The writing studies distinguish actual observations from main-text pointers to uninspected files.

The ICCV 2025 rules require an eight-page initial body and a separate supplement rather than extra appendix pages in the main submission. The official kit and author guidance—not ICML’s or CVPR’s remembered conventions—control typography and caption decisions. A distinct final-production instruction was not retrieved, so unverified operational details remain explicitly unresolved.

Later editions can add their own sources, measurements and examples without blending years. The shared visual and argument workbenches remain conference-independent.

ICCV submission deadlines, event periods and locations are listed below, independently of the inspected writing editions. Unannounced dates are not estimated.

Dates for ICCV only, newest edition first. Submission dates can fall in the previous calendar year. AoE means Anywhere on Earth (UTC−12); other stated timezones are retained. Reconfirm official instructions before submission or travel.

  1. Identify the concrete visual failure or capability gap and show it clearly.
  2. Draw the information available during training and inference, including external components.
  3. Pair each design choice with a matched control or falsifiable prediction.
  4. Align quantitative and qualitative evidence, preserving exceptions and failure cases.
  5. Check caption legibility, metrics, units and source attribution in the compiled PDF.

Use the argument worksheet and visual blueprints to turn the outline into an inspectable paper.
