Writing study: Linear Fundamental Matrix Estimation from 7 or 5 Points
← CVPR 2026 oral writing corpus
Taci Ata Kucukpinar, Juan Mogollon, Joshua Fraser, Timothy Duff, Kannappan Palaniappan · Official CVPR 2026 oral record
Figure, table and section ledger
Editorial contribution type: Theory & formal analysis (primary).
Layout extraction, not a required paper template. Counts are distinct caption labels; a multi-panel figure counts once. Section spans are estimated from heading positions, including floats and whitespace. Method and limitations.

Extraction notes: No attached appendix boundary detected. Zero means no recognized caption, not independently verified absence.
Section-by-section lengths and source pages
The title/abstract/front matter precede the first numbered heading. A span ends at the next detected top-level heading, not at the last sentence; end-page whitespace is included. References and statements are listed separately. These are not measurements of text-only or artwork area.

Separate source files—excluded from canonical-PDF totals
A separate author version may repeat main text and references. Whole-file lengths and counts are not extra appendix material and are never added to the canonical PDF totals. Read the study's source scope for which sections received substantive reading versus layout inspection.
Additional source 1
Separate PDF (or ZIP containing it): whole-file layout of 4 physical pages; 2 detected figures and 1 tables. These may include overlapping main-text material.
Located appendix only: starts on physical p.1; ≈ 3.94 page-equivalents, 2 figure labels and 1 table labels. This interval is distinct from the whole file.
Argument and organization
- Formulation and solution §§3.1–3.5
State geometry and non-degeneracy assumptions, normalize, analyze spurious solutions, linearize and collect the solver.
- Experiments §§4–5
Separate controlled synthetic noise tests from real-data approximate virtual-point use inside RANSAC.
Problem, claim and contribution
The introduction presents an unexpected uniqueness result in a classical problem, then distinguishes the exact seven-correspondence configuration from the practical five-point approximation.
Abstract and §1, PDF pp. 1–2 · Main paper · Additional source 2
Argument and section order
Non-degeneracy assumptions appear before normalization and the solver, with a numerical example and remark connecting algebraic uniqueness to geometry.
§3, PDF pp. 3–6; Example 1 and Remark 1 · Main paper · Additional source 2
Figures, captions and visual explanation
Figure 2 explicitly draws camera centers, two image planes and dependent versus independent scene points next to their equations; the question-and-answer caption states exactly what can be reconstructed.

Tables, comparisons and evidence
Synthetic tests distinguish noise on independent versus dependent correspondences. Real-data plots then sweep RANSAC iterations and show runtime–accuracy curves rather than a single selected runtime.

Appendix and reproducibility
The supplement expands per-scene real-data results and algebraic-derivation details, while keeping exact assumptions and the actionable solver in the main manuscript.
Supplement §§8–9, PDF pp. 1–2; Table 2 · Main paper · Additional source 2
Clarity and writing conventions
The real-data discussion acknowledges that one method combination does not improve accuracy over faster alternatives at 1,000 samples, preserving a meaningful negative comparison.

What to reuse—and what not to infer
Transferable lesson: A geometric theory paper should display the configuration and assumptions before the algebra, then separate exact-solver experiments from practical approximations and report a runtime–accuracy frontier.
Boundary: The title is not a general claim that arbitrary uncalibrated five-point fundamental estimation is exactly solvable linearly; dependent points, non-degeneracy and virtual-point approximation matter.
Apply this lesson using the argument and evidence worksheet.

- Writing-focused manuscript scan + selected visuals inspected
- Main text
- Manuscript-wide writing scan of PDF pp. 1–10: framing, argument sequence, section organization, figure/table captions, evaluation interpretation and limitations; reference sections identified. This is a writing-focused scan, not an exhaustive technical proof or reproduction audit. Main PDF pages 3 and 6 were rendered and visually inspected.
- Appendix / supplement
- Writing-focused scan of the separate supplementary PDF, pp. 1–4, including its organization, captions, protocol/evidence detail and limitation material where present; proofs and code listings were inspected for exposition, not independently verified or executed. Supplement §§8–9, PDF pp. 1–2; Table 2. Linked video/audio demonstrations and non-PDF archive contents were not assessed.
