Writing study: Differentiable Laplacian Matrix Guided Superpixel Segmentation

← CVPR 2026 oral writing corpus

Jeremy Juybari, Joshua Hamilton, Shuvra Das, Chaofan Chen, Andre Khalil, Yifeng Zhu · Official CVPR 2026 oral record

Figure, table and section ledger

Editorial contribution type: Training, objectives & optimization (primary).

Layout extraction, not a required paper template. Counts are distinct caption labels; a multi-panel figure counts once. Section spans are estimated from heading positions, including floats and whitespace. Method and limitations.

Extraction notes: No attached appendix boundary detected. Zero means no recognized caption, not independently verified absence.

Section-by-section lengths and source pages

The title/abstract/front matter precede the first numbered heading. A span ends at the next detected top-level heading, not at the last sentence; end-page whitespace is included. References and statements are listed separately. These are not measurements of text-only or artwork area.

Separate source files—excluded from canonical-PDF totals

A separate author version may repeat main text and references. Whole-file lengths and counts are not extra appendix material and are never added to the canonical PDF totals. Read the study's source scope for which sections received substantive reading versus layout inspection.

    Additional source 1

Separate PDF (or ZIP containing it): whole-file layout of 6 physical pages; 8 detected figures and 2 tables. These may include overlapping main-text material.

Located appendix only: starts on physical p.1; ≈ 5.94 page-equivalents, 8 figure labels and 2 table labels. This interval is distinct from the whole file.

    Argument and organization

    1. 3. Method

Introduces three losses individually before the combined objective.

    2. 4. Experiments

Defines both conventional quality and fragmentation metrics, then tests weight and components.

    Problem, claim and contribution

The introduction makes nondifferentiable enforced-connectivity postprocessing the concrete obstacle, rather than treating all segmentation accuracy as the target.

    pp. 1–2; Figure 1 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Argument and section order

Each loss receives its own rationale; normalization of the weighted reconstruction term is explained before the final sum.

    §§3.1–3.4 pp. 3–4 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Figures, captions and visual explanation

Matched-color baseline/regularized curves use different markers; a separate fragmentation panel prevents accuracy curves from concealing disconnected regions.

    Figures 2–4 pp. 6–7 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Tables, comparisons and evidence

The weight sweep and table expose a quality trade-off: stronger regularization improves fragmentation measures at a small cost to assignment accuracy.

    Figure 5 and Table 1 p. 7 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Appendix and reproducibility

Supplementary sections explicitly discuss trace maximization as a connectivity proxy and show failure modes, useful qualifications to the graph-theoretic motivation.

    Supplement §§10–13 pp. 2–6 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Clarity and writing conventions

Tables distinguish with-EC and without-EC settings and show metric directions; captions explain marker correspondence and the superpixel-count range.

What to reuse—and what not to infer

Transferable lesson: If the contribution addresses a failure hidden by standard metrics, define a direct diagnostic and show the regularization trade-off.

Boundary: Maximizing Laplacian trace is a surrogate, not by itself a theorem that every predicted superpixel will be connected.

Apply this lesson using the argument and evidence worksheet.
