Writing study: U^2Flow: Uncertainty-Aware Unsupervised Optical Flow Estimation

← CVPR 2026 oral writing corpus

Xunpei Sun, Wenwei Lin, Yi Chang, Gang Chen · Official CVPR 2026 oral record

Figure, table and section ledger

Editorial contribution type: Training, objectives & optimization (primary).

Layout extraction, not a required paper template. Counts are distinct caption labels; a multi-panel figure counts once. Section spans are estimated from heading positions, including floats and whitespace. Method and limitations.

Extraction notes: No attached appendix boundary detected. Zero means no recognized caption, not independently verified absence.

Section-by-section lengths and source pages

The title/abstract/front matter precede the first numbered heading. A span ends at the next detected top-level heading, not at the last sentence; end-page whitespace is included. References and statements are listed separately. These are not measurements of text-only or artwork area.

Separate source files—excluded from canonical-PDF totals

A separate author version may repeat main text and references. Whole-file lengths and counts are not extra appendix material and are never added to the canonical PDF totals. Read the study's source scope for which sections received substantive reading versus layout inspection.

    Additional source 1

Separate PDF (or ZIP containing it): whole-file layout of 7 physical pages; 8 detected figures and 4 tables. These may include overlapping main-text material.

Located appendix only: starts on physical p.1; ≈ 6.94 page-equivalents, 8 figure labels and 4 table labels. This interval is distinct from the whole file.

    Argument and organization

    1. 3. Method

Separates architecture, uncertainty supervision, loss, and bidirectional fusion.

    2. 4.3–4.6 Evaluation

Tests uncertainty ranking separately from flow accuracy, then ablates and transfers.

    Problem, claim and contribution

The opening distinguishes predicting a flow field from knowing where it is unreliable, then asks how reliability can improve estimation.

    pp. 1–2; Figure 1 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Argument and section order

Uncertainty prediction, use during refinement, and use during fusion receive separate subsections rather than one undifferentiated module claim.

    §§3.2–3.4 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Figures, captions and visual explanation

The mask example overlays reliability cues on error maps; the large qualitative grid aligns reference, baseline, prediction, uncertainty, and error for the same frames.

    Figure 3 p. 4; Figure 5 p. 7 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Tables, comparisons and evidence

Sparsification evaluates uncertainty ranking, while a component table exposes that adding uncertainty without decoupling can worsen flow results.

    Figure 4 p. 6; Table 3 p. 7 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Appendix and reproducibility

Supplementary diagrams clarify the recurrent update and augmentation-generated targets; additional domain results extend rather than replace the main uncertainty test.

Supplement pp. 2–7 · Main paper · Additional source 2

    Clarity and writing conventions

The conclusion names augmentation-dependent uncertainty as a limitation; the homography loss is explicitly restricted to KITTI rather than advertised as universally beneficial.

What to reuse—and what not to infer

Transferable lesson: When adding confidence to a predictor, show both confidence quality and its downstream utility, including a naive coupling that fails.

Boundary: Uncertainty learned from chosen augmentations need not detect all real-world errors; homography smoothing has scene assumptions.

Apply this lesson using the argument and evidence worksheet.
